Y my lyfe so crazy, kitties?
I never properly update this thing anymore.
In short, am chaotically busy. Go to concerts. <3 friends.
The Killers were ... great. I don't even want to describe it because there are no words. I wish I could have seen them when they weren't so big and I could get up close. My life feels more complete now. I felt a real hole that I had never seen them in person. It didn't feel right. I just knew something was going to happen to them like to Mbox and I'd never see them when they were good. I'm so happy I got to see B Flo. :]
Iggy & the Stooges were pretty cool as well. He was completely shwastey face, of course, and obv. shirtless. He looks good for a man his age, but crack still kills. His pants were so tight that he had to stop and hitch them up in the middle of a song. Apparently, his equipment got stolen in Detroit the next night. (Smelly is secretly behind this; if I didn't love her I would tell the popo to check her and Andru's mail-deflecting apartment.)
The Duke Spirit was everything I'd thought they be, and more. They are ... electric, live. I LOVE them. Everyone should check them out! It's a pretty British girl singing garage rock. How can it possibly get any better?
Sia was much better in person than she is in performance, thankfully. I enjoyed her show but I can still not comprehend anything she sings and I wish she wouldn't sample from the Beatles. I don't know why she is so unintelligible. She's from Australia, not outer space, or so she claims.
Man Man and Louis XIV put on solid performances. I wasn't familiar with Man Man before, and only vaguely so with Louis XIV, and I will definitely check them out for sure. But I also saw the Whigs and was very underwelmed.
That's it for Download 2008. Some other bands played. I saw a couple more but they didn't make a huge impression on me, good or bad. I have to thank Amanda, Ben, and Britt for going with me. I had a great time.
Hurrah for winning tickets!! <3 Digphilly. <3 facebook for alerting me to the contest.
Dave Matthews Band was also a good concert. I was late, and they didn't play my fave song by them, but I def. enjoyed myself. I KNOW QUITE A GOOD AMOUNT OF MY FRIENDS THINK I AM A LOSER FOR LIKING DMB, BUT THEY CAN SUCK IT. They are legitimately talented, and I enjoy talent. I did NOT enjoy, however, breathing pot ALL NIGHT long at that concert. JHC, that was a stoner concert. Also the only drunker concert I have been to is Lynyrd Skynyrd, and it's kind of impossible to top that. DMB really, truly packed the Virginia Beach Ampitheatre.
I only went to see Bright Eyes on a whim because it was cheap, and to hang out with Laura. Or, I THOUGHT it was Bright Eyes. It was actually Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band.
While waiting for Laura to show up, I was watching the 12-year old boys in girl pants walk in, which never gets old. I love to make fun of people in my mind. But inside the Norva -- which is AMAZING; I love the venue -- it was really cold and people were starting to queue up around the stage. The openers were called The Evangelicals, which should have been a tipoff, but we just wanted to hear some Bright Eyes songs. They were mostly pretty bad. A couple of their songs weren't excruciating, but most were. I don't know how to describe it. They start off with, "Guys ... thanks for coming ... this song is called 'Paperback Suicide' at which point Laura and I burst the fuck out laughing. Everyone around us were the indie/scene types who think any expression of emotion at a concert -- even mockery, it seems -- is unacceptable and they looked at us like we had third heads. Also, many of the girls made alarmingly bad fashion choices.
Finally, Conor Oberst came onstage. My friends ... The charm of Bright Eyes was that he wrote original, interesting songs even though he had the voice of a dying cow.
Now that he is semi-sober, his voice has improved to mediocre -- but, now his songs are average as well. They are the most boring things I've ever heard. He drank Coors Lite on stage and his songs were HORRID. He did not play ONE Bright Eyes song. We left early.
Don't listen to Rolling Stone! Conor Oberst was better as a crackwhore!
